How Auchan implemented the Nutri-Score systemin record time

Auchan Case Study

“Alkemics responded very quickly, integrating the Nutri-Score system into their database in 3 weeks. Without these efforts, it would have been difficult to achieve this objective, within our deadlines in any case. It’s easy to use the Alkemics platform to import the scores, and we can be sure that once each score is entered, they will display correctly on all applicable product pages, as well as on all of our websites and apps.”

How Auchan Retail France implemented the Nutri-Score system in record time

Constantly looking for new ways to increase transparency in consumer information, Auchan Retail France is among the first to use the new nutritional labelling system Nutri-Score. Thanks to the Alkemics platform, they were able to meet their tight deadline for the implementation of this system.

“Providing our customers with a quick way to evaluate the nutritional qualities of a product [helps us] fulfill our commitment to transparency.” Stated Laurence Lamberger, Quality Engineer for Auchan Production, summarizing the retailer’s rapid adoption of the Nutri-Score system. This nutritional labelling system has also earned the support of other actors, including Leclerc, Intermarché, Fleury Michon and Danone.

Work on this system accelerated at the beginning of 2016. The January 26, 2016 law on the modernization of France’s healthcare system provides for government recommendations encouraging the use of this type of labelling system. A study was launched in September of 2016, comparing the effectiveness of 4 labelling systems. Following this study, the Ministry of Health formally selected the Nutri-Score system in March of 2017.

Implementing Nutri-Score quickly to encourage widespread adoption

Inspired by energy labels for household appliances, the Nutri-Score system uses a colour-coded label to rate a product’s nutritional value, from A (highest nutritional quality) to E (lowest nutritional quality). The labelling system is a valuable source of information, designed to be an effective way to inform consumers and increase transparency.

With just a few exceptions, this labelling system applies to all processed food products. A product’s score is calculated by measuring the amount, per 100 grams, of:

• nutrients and foods to choose frequently: fibre, protein, fruits and vegetables
• nutrients to limit: energy, saturated fats, sugar and salt

While the Nutri-Score is an effective way to summarize nutritional information, its use is recommended, not mandatory. This is why several dedicated retailers and brands were looking to implement the new system quickly. “With our strong initiative to implement [this system], we hope to encourage other actors [to do so].” Said Laurence Lamberger. “We truly believe that such a system is in everybody’s interest, and will significantly improve information sharing with consumers.”

This meant that the new labelling scheme would need to be launched on a deadline. This was a challenge, as in March 2017, Auchan committed to using the new system for the online and physical packaging of all concerned products from their private-label brand.
“We set ourselves a short deadline – 3 months – to enter all of the Nutri-Scores. To do this, we first needed to translate the Nutri-Score documentation, then calculate the scores according to each product’s specifications. Finally, we had to integrate the scores into the product pages.”

The Nutri-Score system, launched in just a few weeks
Auchan was able to reach this ambitious goal with the help of the Alkemics team and platform.
These currently include 4 500 product listings.

“The quality of the visual is good. We will continue to work on optimizing the placement, but the essential elements are there.” Explained Laurence Lamberger. “Our product pages now include the Nutri-Score system, contributing to increased consumer transparency.”

Other manufacturers and retailers can also now implement the Nutri-Score system.
With the flexible data model and convenient import features on the Alkemics platform, this system can be easily integrated into product pages, without additional costs and within strict deadlines. Once all data has been collected, it takes less than a minute to put the information online. Thanks to the simplicity of the process, this small action from brands and retailers has a big impact on information sharing with consumers.
